well i am a criminology major and currently taking a coarse called "crime and punishment". very interesting and fun coarse and we had a conversation about the rise in crime in nyc.

according to my professor the rise in crime in nyc is due to the success of the nypd in dropping crimes to all new lows. how many of you would agree?

secondly my professor also sited that the reason why crime might be increasing in nyc or in a lot of other cities in general is because of the growth of the young population(16 - 24 age group). how many of you would agree?

these are not my personal opinion just my professor and i was wondering what the city data bloggers might think.(would post this in in the nyc rime thread but theirs to much arguments going on their just want to get to the point)

Firstly it is course, not coarse. Secondly..do you go to John Jay? Thirdly, I agree that crime is rising because we are comparing it against the all time record low, which is tough to compare to (victim of their own success). It is more accurate to compare to the historical average for the past 15 years or so, especially the past 5 years when we were driving down crime rates.

I agree that youth plays a part in crime rates as well. I think we should also keep in mind that as the crime rate drops, we see big gains in the beginning, then incremental gains afterward..which is where we are now. 15 years ago we saw major drops in crime, and since then it has been incremental drops, and going forward, should the crime rate drop further, it will be smaller and smaller steps, but still declining. To many this seems like crime "won't go down any further" but the reality is it will be an incremental decline versus the steep drops at the beginning.

Is is true that all the CUNY's have open enrollment. And by that I mean anyone that graduates HS from NYC is guaranteed a spot at some CUNY school, whether it is a 2 year or 4 year school, regardless of GPA/SATs etc? (Assuming of course there are slots available.)

it all depends really. certain cuny schools like Baruch , city college, and hunter might as well be private because they ask for nice high school gpa,s and are very well recognized schools for the city.

but then you have schools like york , and new york city college of technology that basically feel like high school again and they pretty much take you with any gpa you have in high school.

now as for 2 years colleges like bmcc and kingsborouh anyone can enroll into these schools its very easy, and if you happen to be kicked out of a 4 year cuny school you can transfer to kings borough or bmcc on that exact week unless its to late of coarse(and free no cost).

now as for your sat test i recomend you take those even though i know a few students who were enrolled in 4 year cuny schools without them(mainly new york city college of technology). but always take your sat because you never know what will happen.

hope i helped ya right lol

Crime is still fairly low, of course you have places like my neighborhood, the WHOLE Bronx and parts of Brooklyn, Queens and Staten. But ive only been robbed once in my whole life here (2 guys with a gun on the 1 train at night) and I'm 22. Pretty good huh? But I also have great street smarts(from my father and my neighborhood), 5'10(not very tall but I played football all through HS and was varsity so I'm very built, I'm not one they would pick out of a bunch and rob lol. But obviously for me its totally different from another persons opinion, like my pops says the 70s makes today look like sesame street lol. But of course you gotta watch your back, they never used guns so freely back then like they do today(kids killing kids for no freaking reason other then a girl or some dumb ****).

The whole Bronx? Really CoolChris? So basically what you are saying is we should ignore all of your posts because you believe areas like Riverdale in the Bronx are total crime hell holes. Thanks for playing!

Riverdale is a beautiful section of The Bronx as is Pelham Bay and Throgs Neck. Woodlawn is nice but the Irish people there are a bit too crazy for my liking. Other then that what is there??!

yea your father is just like my father, my father has many stories about the 80,s when he came here from haiti in 1980. also the robberies my father went through were much more savage then a lot of the gun point robberies today.

You can get into any city university if you score high enough on your GED exam, even to NYU. I got into Hunter College and my GED score was 277(back in 1987). Don't know how it is now, but the H.S graduation rate is no higher then 60%.
