He can rent a room when he gets there. It's easier since he's a young guy and doesn't have to worry about things I would. It's not ideal to come without a job but plenty of people do it that way. Sometimes that's the only option. Most companies don't go looking out of state for an employee unless it's a 6-figure job or a very specific type of job. So the majority of people who come here don't have a job either.
You can do it. I did the exact same thing when I was young.
However, I did have the advantage of having contacts. Have you worked in the business in LA at all? I worked there for a few years, built up a rep as a hard worker and then used that once I got to this coast.
Yes, there are more productions in LA, but there is also more competition out there. If you are willing to work harder than anyone else, you can make it here. The hardest part is getting your foot in the door as most of the competition drops away as they figure out that the industry is tough and not glamorous. I think PA's still make the same daily wage that I did 15 years ago.
Rent a room so that your overhead is low and try to be close to a train and Manhattan so you can make those early calls.
