It seems like something that is much needed, and something many residents would want. With how close many good neighborhoods are with bad neighborhoods I would think there would have already been some pop up in NY a long time ago. Anyone know why there haven't been? If similar like minded people who share the same beliefs, ideals, and want to live in peace and quiet together than I don't see why not.
Every fancy condo and co-op in the city is "gated" and watched over by a doorman. Most of low-rise NYC is ungateable because that would require turning public streets into private property, something that very few New Yorkers would approve of.

When you gate a community the community becomes responsible for the roads and all infastructure in there. Perhaps it is to cost prohibitive to have.
There are in fact many traditional type gated communities all over the city in addition to all the apartment buildings w/doormen which are de facto gated communities.

This is a surprise to me, but maybe thats due to my Manhattan provincialism. Like others here, I think of doorman buildings as "gated".
But can you name some of the traditional type gated communities in the city? Where are they? Just curious.
There are actual gated communities in the boroughs, like Silver Beach at the very tip of Throggs Neck.
