Easily. It's the single folks in the $30-40k/yr range that don't quite cut it. Unless you're just the type of person that is okay with a very bohemian lifestyle and aren't big on materialism, which is always commendable, but, quite difficult in a place like NY that beckons you to spend spend spend and keep it flossy.

Or living with parents like myself.

People brag as if living paycheck to paycheck is cool. That **** isn't for me. I've seen what worrying about money does to people. I rather live at home and help my family out then brag about "living" on my own. I also want to have something to show for my work. Throwing your entire paycheck towards rent, food, and bills leaves you naked with your wang in your hand in the middle of the street at the end of day.

A LOT of my friends moved back home. I rent from my guy's parents and we live right under them, but guess what? It saves money. It's not a fancy place and privacy and noise levels can be an issue, but I MUCH rather stay afloat.

LOL..ask what the salary range is. Better be 50k+ if they're asking for all of that.

alot of depends on how you come off to this people remember you dealing with people who very diff in there lifestyle than your and like or not when a person see's a nyc address you got to remember you dealing with a person might never been farther than town limits there whole life ..

i get that alot from my small town in Utah where i'm from and i get this statement alot back from the big city to vist us little folks out in the country and show off how much you make ..

so it might be you dealing with a person who never been far away from there little town

sometimes send a picture along with the applications ..give them a little more personal info on dislike's and like's when apply to a smaller place along with goals also remember you sometimes have to tone down the application that you give someone ..

tell them you like to go out and camp and hikeing in the back country around the area or go fishing or go out and take pics of the back country ..make your application more small town feel if dealing with a small place or dealing with a large midwestern hospital or other place give it a little more of the big city polish that they want ..

when we hire the nurseing staff for the casino business what sells me on the person is how they speak to me and they act and if they will get along with the other people in the staff . .

in a large casino there is a one on duty nurse there 24 hours a day with us to handle things that most of the staff is not trained up for ..

i have so many hours of emt & military trauma training and knowage inside my head for training cycle we are made to do evey month .. .if you have a gunshot or knife wound or something cut and bleeding in large amounts and it need to be stoped & haveing a heart attack and you need a person to start and help with CPR then i'm you go to guy if i'm on scene but if not that then i basic a stetcher carrier to help carry you out to the emt personal vehicle ..

you also have to remember some of the people no matter what job there in they came across as total a---holes in the interviews with people and some come across as haveing i know better than you complex and i see in all business .. .

so look around and earmark some of the areas ..also look at the VA hospital work and some of the hospital or clincs that they have around the country

I'm a respectful and positive individual. From what I know, nursing is pretty much the same across the board. I don't really want to veer th thread in the wrong direction trying to explain to people (who aren't in nursing) how crappy the field is. It's just something you have to experience.

I'm not worried about the workplace in nursing anymore. I'm pretty sure I'll never go back to it. I feel way too intelligent to put up with all the mommy-crap they throw at you in nursing. I'm good at it and don't find it academically challenging, but I have standards and nurses are treated like dirt.

Sure, if your rent/utilities is $0 and have no debt, $30-40k is an entirely comfortable amount of money to exist on. If you were maintaining your own household, you'd have to be making probably $70-80k/yr to reach the same level of disposable income. Disposable income for toys and fun time is sexy. Rent and electricity bills are not no matter where you live.

Living at home is like this decade's version of internet dating. Meeting people online in the early 2000's used to carry a huge "loser" stigma that basically doesn't exist anymore. So it seems to be this decade with grown ass adults living with parents (or 5 roommates). Attitudes about stuff like this can change drastically with the times you live in.

Thank you for saying that. I just turned 30 today and felt like a loser knowing I'm probably going to have to stay with roommates over the next few years if I want to be in a good financial position. But really, if you think about it- it's dumber to live on your own and not save. Who really cares what others think as long as you are planning for your financial security, right?

Almost everyone that I know has a roomie these days. Esp. if they are single...and ESP. in NYC. I'm going to rent from my guy's parents for as long as possible. We live below them in a basement apartment, but it's all I need. My savings account is going up, so that's all that matters :-D

Well I do pay some of my family's bills which amount to about 1k/month. My parents have their house paid off (property tax is still 6k/year) and I rather help them save as much as they can for retirement since they did pay cash for my state uni degree. It's the least I can do. I was also able to pay for my broither first semester of grad school and hopefully I'll be able to do it again. That gives me more satisfaction than being able to say, "I've got my own apartment".

1k worth of expenses ain't much when it comes to NYC but it'd be considered normal in many other parts of the country. I also don't spend much via discretionary spending. I allocate about 10% of my pay (that includes metrocard) towards any discretionary stuff and that's it. The rest I stash away in case of emergency or when I intend to move out of NYC.

My parents don't need my help and I can move out and live paycheck to paycheck but why should I? Living paycheck to paycheck is nothing to take pride in.

To each his own. I know I'm making the rational choice both in the short and long term. I have no problem with taking the negatives of being 25 and living at home.
