I see happy people. I see sales and incomes being generated. I see a street no longer populated by drug dealers and prostitutes and porno stores. I see sections closed off to cars, and people resting on the chairs and being sociable. I see convenient moviehouses. I see theaters, some of which used to be porno theaters, but are now showing productions that people from all over the world flock to see.

What's not to like?

Sure. Why would anyone like Times Square, except as a novelty? It's ugly, vulgar, crowded - and with the mall part, even worse.

It's not Time Square, it's Times Square. At the very least get that right before you condemn the place.

I love the Square, well, maybe once a year in the dark days. Last time I was there I bought a cheap t-shirt emblazoned with the the words "New York F***ing City" for my nephew. He loves that shirt.

Snobs in the 19th century probably said the same thing ("vulgar, crass, cheap") about the Bowery, when it was an entertainment center. Ditto about Coney Island in its heyday or, well, Times Square, in its first glory era. ("Oh, dear, look at all those common people celebrating V-J Day! Look at them buying cotton candy and watching Mickey Rooney movies! And who watches vaudeville, when one could be watching opera?")

We cannot all be refined people who attend lectures at the Metropolitan Museum while partaking of tea and finger sandwiches.

Vulgar is great, crowded is great, commercial is great. They impart vitality and diversity and change.
