I took a friend who recently moved to NYC a year ago (and lives on the UWS) through Forest Hills Gardens hoping to show her the beauty of the neighborhood and that there is more to NYC than Manhattan and as we were walking through she said, "This place is kinda cheesy." I said, "Really?" This is not the response I usually get when I do this "tour" so I was taken aback and didn't really press her on what she meant. She's crazy, right? Are there people that don't like Forest Hills Gardens?

I have taken people from overseas to see Forest Hills Gardens and they are always surprised and delighted to see this lovely area within NYC.

Someone who moved to the city a year ago is not really going to care about a suburban area IMO. Particularly if she is from one (is she?).

She sounds like someone who doesn't like or understand Tudor architecture.

Is she someone who like to vacation at Disney? Sometimes those people are the first to accuse authentic things of being "cheesy" because they are confused. Too much time at Disney could do that.

Maybe take her to the Metropolitan Museum and see if she says it's old-fashioned and boring.
