I'm an Irish student and I'm headed over to NYC for the summer with 5 friends to do some crappy bar work for a few months. We're still having a hard time finding a place but we've just been offered an apartment in Bed-Stuy that we can afford and seems to work. I'm just wondering if we should avoid that area, because I've seen pretty mixed reactions online. The place is on Macon Street and Marcy Avenue.
I was hoping that anyone who lives near there or is in that area often would be able to tell me what it would be like for 4 guys and 2 girls in that area? We're all around 21 years-old, all white with Irish accents if that makes any difference. Also, is there much seasonal work in this area, or just even bars and restaurants?
I don't think it's the right area for you based on what you described. I think it's safe enough (others would probably disagree), but if you're young, only here for 5 months and looking to work in the bar/restaurant industry I think your best bet would be one of the more popular areas among the demographic you fit in- i.e. williamsburg, greenpoint, fort greene/clinton hill, astoria in queens. Even maybe the East Village in manhattan. What is your budget?
Also do you have jobs lined up already? Not to sound negative, but the unemployment situation here is pretty serious still. I've worked in the NYC restaurant world and it can be pretty hard to find a job unless you have some really amazing work experience, or have connections in the industry. Restaurants have 'open calls' when they are hiring and if you show up to one there are usually at least 30 people there going for each position.
Our budget is pretty low to be honest. The place we've been offered is $3000 a month for the six of us. Not all of us have jobs going over, but we all have experience of some kind. I've got 3 years of experience of working in bars/restaurants. I'm used to travelling for an hour to get to work every day, so that's not too big an issue for me if it means I can save money.
So long as we have enough beds to sleep on (we do) then we'll be okay. We're fully expecting to be living in terrible conditions. Last summer I had 11 friends sharing a place in Manhattan.

You want to live in bedstuy with 5 other people to do some crappy bartending? Lol.
