I'm considering a job in North Bergen. I live in Astoria close to the Triboro Bridge. Google Maps says the commute will be 20-30 minutes over the Triboro and the GW. I'm aware that this is something like $20 per day in tolls, but it seems like the drive itself isn't a monster, plus it's a reverse commute. Any thoughts? I'm going to have a hard time getting away from the current job to try out the commute during commuting hours before making a decision.
You cannot really get a "reverse commute" if you are both going into Manhattan and out of Manhattan in the same trip. One of them will be WITH intense traffic.

exactly.
if one gets a job in jersey, why would it still be desirable to live in nyc? paying 3% city tax and struggle with the overcrowded living situations? how appealing is that?
If you live in Queens, there's really only manhattan or LI that are easy to go to and that's still debatable.
Any bridge or tunnel is slow as snail during rush hour to the city. I still don't know why people drive into the city, it's the most expensive and dumb thing to do unless you got a govt free spot.
Mornings, especially if you leave before 8am, will be fine. And you will only pay the toll on the triborough in the morning. The way back will be a double toll, but depending on the time you get back, you might be able to take the FDR coming off the GW and go down the Queensboro to avoid the toll on the triborough. If you come back straight in the middle of rush hour, that won't be possible because of the traffic queens bound on the Queensboro. Ask your potential employers if they would be willing to compensate you for the tolls you would pay. Many do.
Not to be overly picky, but North Bergen is in HUDSON County, not Bergen County.
I thought of saying that but then I reasoned that if Google maps gave him the route across the GWB and a 20-30 minute trip it would logically be taking him to BERGEN COUNTY, presumably the Northern part and close to the bridge.
Certainly if he was looking for the town of North Bergen, the logical route would be through the Lincoln Tunnel.
(I don't see the trip from Astoria to North Bergen, Hudson County, in 20 minutes without a helicopter. But maybe he could pull off Fort Lee.)
