Pearl Paint and J&R's? Am so getting over this City!
Wish one would have known about J&R, would love to have stopped in to see what if anything was on sale.
Between high rent and other costs then the Internet am surprised J&R lasted long as they did anyway. Once one comes out of the Brooklyn Bridge/City Hall subway stop it is a whole other world down there now. Far different from what one remembers from working on Wall Street back in the 1990's.
Both amazon and apple. They manufacture and sell a product than also sell products that they do not manufacture to be used with the products that they manufacture and sell. They are both abusive corporations.
I always despised J & R. Their prices were not competitive and their staff was the rudest I ever encountered in retail.
Good riddance.
Trouble is the replacements will likely be a Citibank, a Chase, a TD Bank , a Starbucks and a Duane Reade so no net improvement.
J&R has always been one of my go to spots for electronics. Wasn't aware this was happening but I think the signs were there. They've been slipping for a few years now. Plus they are do for a remodeling/change in strategy. The layout of the store is awkward. From a business POV they might also need to get rid of some of their departments in the retail store and only sell some of that stuff online. The store is too big, unless your a behemoth like Best Buy I just don't think it makes much business sense anymore to have a huge electronics store.
I'm thinking they will leave website and re-open later maybe not at same spot but with a much smaller retail store.
Agree with Kefir, overpriced and rude staff. Its just capitalism doing its job and eliminating those who can't compete.
Why people get sad over a frickin retail store closing is beyond me.
Its not like when CBGB closed, or the recent Roseland closing for chrissakes.
Or when the great music store Manny's on 48th St. closed in 2009. I used to make special trips up from DC to get things at Manny's I couldn't find in DC. I think there are still some interesting music shops left on 48th Street's "music row". But the internet and chain stores are killing off all the interesting mom and pop stores. Time marches on, the bastard.
I liked J and R for music and movies. They had vinyl as well. Entertainment buffs who were looking for more obscure film and music often found it here. They thing is, No one seems to buy hard copy music and film anymore and online shopping vs brick and mortar stores is a trend that is only growing. Many retail stores esp electronic are on their way out.
