Did they have a clearance sale? Wish I knew so I could have gotten some items!
Clearance sales aren't what they used to be, everything is gamed for the big dogs.
Most always when a company declares bankruptcy or has a major going out of business sale an outside company is brought in to liquidate stock. Then it becomes a game; early discounts are nothing to write home about, but if you wait for the deep (as in 75% off) days nothing may be left worth having.
Electronics and so forth in particular are famously snapped up to be offered either online or elsewhere by those who make their living as such things. Where do you think much of the "closeout" merchandise on eBay comes from?
I remember going there frequently on my lunch breaks when I worked in the area. All these stores closing that I frequented often when I was in school makes me feel my age. Tower Records in the E. Village and at Lincoln Ctr. Virgin Records on Times Square. Borders on Park Ave and the Time Warner Center. B&N at Lincoln Center. Colosseum Books on B'way. And although Palladium is not a store, I was so bummed to find out it was torn down to make room for an NYU dorm and PC Richards!

Agree with Kefir, overpriced and rude staff. Its just capitalism doing its job and eliminating those who can't compete.
Why people get sad over a frickin retail store closing is beyond me.
Its not like when CBGB closed, or the recent Roseland closing for chrissakes.
Actually I heard some people say good riddance to Roseland. Apparently the sound system, seating or acoustics were lousy. And was not a favorite venue for bands or for their fans. I found the place to be okay.
Within 2 blocks of the 86th St 4/5/6 station, there are 4 Starsbucks. They just built a new one on 87th and third. If they could build retail on Park Ave, there'd probably be 6.
There is a Starbucks on 49th and Madison, And a new one on the same block going up. This makes no sense to me, It's difference of half a block.

Loved Tower Records at Lincoln Ctr and East 86th Street. Both stores had classical music departments staffed by persons who knew what they were talking about thus were excellent reference sources. So many of those staffers were older persons so one often wonders what became of them after Tower Music closed all it's locations. I mean there aren't many classical music stores in left in Manhattan.

I always thought it was strange that you could rent movies at the Lincoln Center Tower Records.
Man, that bites. I remember J&R, I used to work around that area. Also remember buying stuff from Pearl Paint.
Yeah, that's the way capitalism rolls but how can most brick and mortars, including local fixtures, really compete against the likes of Walmart or Amazon?
If Century 21 goes out of business though I'm gonna commit hara-kiri...
