Wednesday is the last day for the lower Manhattan store, which had been struggling amid a difficult environment for consumer electronics retailers. ‘J&R will close its doors so that we can rebuild this location into what we hope will be an unprecedented retailing concept and social mecca,’ says a letter from the owners that will be made public.

Iconic consumer electronics retailer J&R Music and Computer World is shutting down after 43 years in business, the Daily News has learned.
Wednesday is the last day for the lower Manhattan store, which had been struggling amid a difficult environment for consumer electronics retailers.
Employees were handed pink slips Wednesday.
J&R owners Joe and Rachelle Friedman will be seeking retail partners to redevelop the site.
A letter signed by the Friedmans announcing the store closure will be made public later Wednesday.
“On April 10th, J&R will close its doors so that we can rebuild this location into what we hope will be an unprecedented retailing concept and social mecca,” the letter says.
J&R has been a fixture on the lower Manhattan retail scene. The store was among the first to reopen after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

Doubt it. The employees got their pink slips today. They're done. Amazon is crushing the competition, even Best Buy is having trouble now.

Sucks. Anyone have any recommendations for other independent electronics stores? I was planning to go to J&R literally this week for some speakers.

Wow J&R and Pearl Paint??????? Pearl Paint especially hits me hard, having went to school for architecture. You weren't officially broken into that major until you went there for supplies and rode that scary ass elevator.
