I know at least 4 (or perhaps 5?) Key Food locations in Queens that are going strong.

Same with my area, I'm just saying most of Queens isn't. In fact, Trader Joes is right by me.

It's interesting that Trader Joe's made a decision to open in a location in Queens that is really only convenient to people with cars. I've known some to take the bus there, but I am assuming that the majority of TJ's shoppers in Queens are arriving by car.

The same goes for the only Fairway location in Queens -- it is way out in Douglaston, and I doubt many without cars would go there.

Same with the Fairway in Brooklyn. Guess they want people showing up that can stuff their trunks with overpriced things they don't need.

Most just rebranded but they are all still Key Food. For example, mine now goes by Fresh n Save.

Let's face it, the trains in queens are ****e. And tons of people drive. The rent is surely cheaper where they are too. Lord knows grocery shopping with a car is much easier...

Well, it's true they are not exactly hurting for business. That place is a madhouse on weekends, although maybe less of a madhouse than the one in Union Square. I went to the Union Sqaure branch once and never went back. The lines to pay in Union Square snaked around the entire store. It was impossible to shop because the people standing in line to pay (like the 50th person back in line) were blocking all the groceries on the shelves.

Not that I pay attention to whether people take the bus to the Fairway in Douglaston, but there's never a lot of people waiting at the bus stop there. I think they def. should open more Fairways in NYC, it's a moderately priced high quality super market. While they don't have those funky snacks that TR has and it's not as cheap either. But Fairway has way more to offer, everything from organic vegs to aged steaks. In fact I'm about to drive there in 5mins.

Can Trader Joe really be considered a rival? All the ones I have been into have a rather bland setup, and they are never as large.

I drove there once and didn't think it was worth the time. But I'm located in Western Queens, so it was quite a distance and I went on a day when the traffic happened to be very bad. However, if that was a Whole Foods instead of a Fairway, I'd probably go much more often. I love Whole Foods.
