You don't have to have the original but you must have a copy on you or in the car with you.

I think it's better to keep it on you in case the car gets towed. You usually need the registration or the title to get the car out of the pound.

Umm yeah - if your car ever gets towed you just tell them it's in the glove compartment and they will escort you to your car.

Yeah, I'm aware. And then they'll make you wait on line again after you've retrieved it. If you have the registration on you, you just wait once. Also, your registration will have your license plate number on it, which is what they use to locate the car when you call in.
