Higher tech presence mentioned by the other poster is the availability of STEM jobs and / or companies that utilize STEM for their source of internal development.
I moved from Miami to PA thinking that once I am here, I would get a better chance to snag an engineering job in NYC. Lo and behold, job opportunities which are engineering related are limited in NYC.
I am not talking about those jobs without REAL engineering degree, which is then called something something engineer just so that it sounds more official. I am not talking about tech job either. I am talking about real engineering job, which required advanced degree in engineering.
Anyway I still think NYC is great esp. for shopping, museum and Broadway (my likings).
Aside of that, I do not think that NYC is the center of the universe.
If you travel out off the country, there are lots of cities that are comparable. London, Hong Kong (as a city), Shanghai, PAris...
The real NYC citizens are latinos, asians, whites then Blacks have been pushed out by immigrants and gentrifiers.
Most of the white folks you see in NYC do not live here, just a small % actually lives here.
The amount of white folks in Manhattan and BK does not compare to the amount of legal and illegal Latinos living around as well as the new explosion of Asians mainly Chinese and Indians moving over here.
Ask around most white folks working in the city lives in NJ, CT, or Long Island. Any middle class white guy knows better than not to live in NYC and get half of their income to pay for the welfare recipients of this city.
