this is the BIGGEST thing that completely pisses me off. GRAVEYARDS. dead people from 200 years ago, right smack dab in the middle of prime real estate. there's a large church and graves from 1800s on church avenue and flatbush. what is the point of this? these dead people belong to no one today. the space is so valuable and can serve the LIVING people. everytime i walk by that church (i used to live in bensonhurst and there is another graveyard there adjoined to a church on 16th ave. and 84th st. with about 100 dead ppl. from the 1800s, pathetic) on church ave., i am pissed. i wish i could tell the pastor that this is all useless and we can use that space for a park or businesses or even residences.

what do you all think?? i KNOW you see graveyards in all the boroughs. and no, don't even get me started on the jewish graveyards in midwood. the ones that take up so much space, wow, and they have actual houses with a casket of bones in them. do people really envy themselves so much as part of existing (or having once existed) on earth? many of these tombstones even have a resume printed onto them with a picture. do dead people work in an afterlife for a fortune 500 corporation? this isn't even a joke. it's as if all these grades and jobs matter after you're dead and gone. i also find it hilarious that dead people have homes (a small % of them are inside of a room/shelter) while there are scores of living people without a home.

the good news is, everytime an empire falls, the next one taking over demolishes these graves and builds things on it that serves the actual living people. the utility issue is the thing that really makes me angry. why are random bones of people inside of a box more important than living people who need that space?

I think what your wrote was adsolutely horrible.
Not every morsel of land needs to have a luxury condo or something built on it.
When these parcels of land became cemetaries, they were not "prime" land.

People that were buried there deserve respect. They were a part of our history.

besides, what do you think we are supposed to do, dig them up and shove them in a hefty bag?

ugh !!

when people die, they cease to be people. they become a bag of bones. the argument for graveyards is that the dead are worth more in society than the living. solutions? yeah, dig them up and find another place in the mountains or other place far away from civilization and dump the waste there. people who are alive need that real estate for whatever reason compared to inanimate objects that sit there and serve no function. i suppose man's ego is so huge that even after he's dead, he must have his resume or house showing to the public while at the same time taking away precious space from those who are actually living life, you know, being alive.

While I personally agree with your view of burial, LAY OFF MY NEIGHBORS!!

My balcony looks out over a huge Jewish cemetery full of the most peaceful and respectful neighbors I have ever had. There's no way in hell I want to see that change.

When my time comes though, I don't plan to take up space on this planet any longer. I want my kids to cremate me, load me up in some rifle bullets, and take me on years of big games hunts!

I love the part - "people ... need that for real estate."

We are truly in a very steep decline.

I'm surrounded by graveyards and I love it. At least dead people are quiet and peaceful.

You think you have it bad, you should see Queens. There's easily double the number of graveyards, it's such a cluster****. There are literally millions of people buried on wasted land. There's even dueling cemeteries, if you go down 58th street you'll see on one side a christian cemetery neatly laid out and on the other side a jewish cemetery crammed in with bodies buried one on top of the other (it's a strange contrast)

There's got to be some way of building over them or something, it's such a waste
