I have yet to meet a younger person, hipster or not, who lives in an apartment alone. Almost everyone I've talked to is with roommates. That's the only reason most people are able to live in expensive parts of the city.
How hipsters are able to afford $3,000 rent and all the expenses?
They sell $3000 worth of vegan/organosnake oil to the next hipster who sells his own organosnake oil to someone else who sells it to someone with a big trust fund
Roommates definitely help with the rent. But even then, it seems like they're not putting away or saving very much for the future. If we didn't save and have a mortgage, then yes, we'd be living a bit more freely as well.
A lot of hipster I've worked with are freelancer developing apps for iPhones or working for dotcom like many of the startups in NYC's silicon alley. I went to an interview 2 years ago and majority of the workers there are young hipsters except the founders were Ivy league boys.
