So I took the 1 train to 42 then the shuttle over to grand central then the 6 to 96th St and walked to 1st Ave... Took 45 minutes. I'm so pissed.. Lol.. I didn't not know it was thaaaat long. Anyway any suggestions on trying a different route to/from Penn Station that might be quicker. I belong to citibike...not sure it that or another subway would be better. Thanks a lot....
I would have taken the 4 or 5 to 86th and walked the few extra blocks.
Once I take the 2 or 3 to 96th...how long is the crosstown bus ride to 1st Ave? Thanks
Depends upon which route you are talking about. Hint: avoid the 57th street crosstown bus. *LOL*
The routes above 57th Street aren't nearly as so bad because the island of Manhattan is a bit narrower up there. In theory you could even walk from say CPW to Fifth or Park Avenue in a short amount of time as many do.

You can do the 2/3 express at 34th to 96th and take the bus crosstown. The train ride alone will be 5 minutes. I don't know how long the bus ride will be.
I'd say more like 10 minutes on the train. But yeah, once you go up for the transfer and everything, I'd say it's around 30 minutes for the trip from start to finish.

I ride 220 blocks to work each way, on the Hudson greenway bike path. This commute is not with the cars and it has reduced my stress levels over taking the subway.
It just takes me 50 minutes without breaking a sweat as the route is downhill on the way to work. The route would be the same for you, except that you get a nice ride through the park first and an even shorter downtown trip
Only on the way back you'll get sweaty and you'll need a shower when you get home, also you can buy prescription deodorant too.
Then that is settled then; take the 2 or 3 express to 96th, and transfer to the crosstown Select bus. Coming home the whole thing in reverse.
Or as one said when the Second Avenue Subway is up and running just take that from 34th to 96th.
Thread over... *LOL*
The M96 is not a Select bus.
(Oops, soprry CMC, I just saw the bottom of your post #18.)
