It is a terrible shame this happened, but you do not feel the same when cops are slaughtering black people in the streets. Perhaps if police were not viewed as occupying armies these kind of tragedies could be avoided.

Again do they (NYPD) have bad apples? sure. Are all police officers bad or unprofessional...no. If you think that THIS society is better off without police I say that is insane.
No the problem is not bad apples and it is not a question of havingnpolice or not. It is the laws and system and the courts that use the police as pawns whose only purpose is to protect private property and a white supremacist system that exists in America.

Not wasting resources to terrorize communities over what? Jay-walking and smoking a joint?

That's the beginning of repairing community-police relationships.

If the problem was a few "bad apples" why would so so many cops be caught brutalizing and murdering people? Because American policing is far to militarized. It is focused on brutal totalitarian crack downs on the people. That is why America has the largest prison population in the world. Police in America are designed to strike fear in the hearts of citizenry particular the poor and black.

No one said jay walking was a horrendous offense that should result in jail.... wow. As far as fare beating...you do it - you get a ticket. You don't pay it - you get a warrant. You play the game and those are the rules. How is it ok that someone doesn't pay? I have to pay so I don't appreciate that mentality. And if you are that kind of person, who knows what other bad decisions you make!
Public transportation is for the public. Instead of spending millions arresting poor people for far beating, use that same money for reduced fare low-income metrocards.

Do you think poor people hop the train for fun? No they do it because they are poor and cannot afford the train...

And yes these warrants are for petty stuff like that, the city should not be wasting taxpayer dollars on that. It should be focusing on rapist, domestic abusers, high level drug dealers. NOT People who smoked a joint or littered or stupid stuff like that. Complete waste of resources. Meanwhile the murderers and rapists and burglars get away.

Totalitarian nanny state is what you live in thanks to your liberal poverty pandering politicians and all of the people who cause issues so we constantly have to be policed. I think your anger is misdirected. Always easier to blame others for societies ills. Have fun with that my friend.
Poverty is what causes crime. And that is exacerbated by neoliberal austerity measures that have come from both democrat and republican politicians

If you have such a problem with leftists, perhaps you should move out of co-op city. Co-op was after all built as subsidized housing for working families. It was fought for by unions, leftists, and communities.

I'm just curious where people in the City want to draw the line between forgetaboutit and jail time?
Public urination and defecation wouldnt be a problem if the city invested in public restrooms.

Littering a failure to curb dogs is a problem I admit, but is better addressed by community pressure and people feeling that they have a role and part to play in their community. Not jail time. Maybe fines that increase in perpetuity if they are not paid. Wage garnishment etc... I mean how crazy is that? The idea of putting someone in jail for littering? I don't want my tax dollars to go to that

Smoking weed doesn't bother me really, how different is it than smoking a cigarette in public?

Wonderful.
WHo needs these puritanical laws at all? If you cannot get the legislature to toss them out then just ignore them.

Blind to the facts is not the same as hysterical. Totalitarian police state!

You have no idea. Nor I guess do the millions of people still risking life and limb to come here, paying millions through investment visas to get here, etc etc. To this totalitarian police state nightmare. They didn't get the memo.

So many people living in their own self-selected media environments with barely any context. Let me guess - you never spent any time longer than a month living outside this country. And you certainly never actually lived in a totalitarian state, police or otherwise.

You don't even realize that posting what you posted here in the actual places you so blithely compare the US to would have you disappeared forthwith. Clueless.

Man this post is gonna be too long. I got a headache typing it....sorry!

This is why people from other countries say we Americans are so ignorant and live in our own bubble. Such a terrible horrible place we have here. So strange that we have people dying to come here literally travelling in horrendous inhumane conditions just to reach our border. So they must just be masochists and gluttons for punishment. Ever try getting a visa to live and work abroad? Some places don’t even allow it no matter what. And let’s see…. Jamaicans have a very hard time obtaining a visa for the US because? They will tell you themselves - why…because of all the criminals that came and f’ed it up for the rest of the honest Jamaicans! So......what a gwan, eh?

So law enforcement’s only purpose is to protect private property and a white supremacist system? Really? Oh ok. Yes, they go out in gangs every day and say let’s go brutalize the populations. Got it. When a person/ community already has the same view as you do where can repair begin? ALL police are the enemy to you so there is no repairing that thought process.

I don’t know where you live but, terrorizing people over smoking weed? That’s been a ticket unless you carrying a QP lol. However, many of the people who loiter and do S&^% out in the public with no regard for those around them are the same type of people who have warrants for serious crimes. I am all for letting go of certain low level offenses. Just ticket them! However as someone else asked…where do we draw the line? Many times murderers, rapists and burglars are caught when they do low level warrant sweeps!

I got a ticket for the turnstyle once…guess what, I paid the fine even though it was not my fault it stole my fare and I had no more money that day. If I wouldn’t have paid I would have had a warrant. Am I saying that police do not harass or make terrible decisions or have views that I disagree with? Nope. I can see both sides of the coin clearly and we have a huge problem on our hands.

I don't have to move out of anywhere. Like you ACTUALLY know where I live or what I do for a living (as to how I know certain things)? Thanks for the suggestion though. Maybe I have friends or family that live there….maybe I am a ghost LOL. Don’t get it twisted this is a forum. I could care less that Co-op city was built by leftist/socialists etc. So what?!

The Coops on Allerton were built by socialist Jews who fought hard for their rights. They also fought against the housing discrimination faced by African Americans and welcomed them into the complex back then. None of them live there now. And they were all super poor, mostly non-English speaking and treated like second class citizens in those times. They went on to create a community that educated themselves, learned English, helped each other and made it out of complete poverty. So don’t tell me about the poor of today who have access to the internet, free education, benefits and housing.

And the residents of Co-op city and the Allerton coops today? How are they helping themselves? Or are they just waiting to be saved by the same “system” that you so hate? The key to freedom is education/ knowledge and not depending on handouts. If you need to take benefits because you fell on hard times ok, but it’s not a career. It should be a step up to help you out of a situation. Also, vote and get involved in politics on a local level. Stop voting for someone just because they look like you, vote because of what they have accomplished and plan on doing! Get involved - I don’t care if it is just your building association or block association. Poverty does not always have to equal crime.

As far as moving…..I could say the same to you...why don't YOU move because this is such a terrible country and the odds are stacked against so many. I guess all these criminals are just being targeted and are misunderstood. Maybe they just need a hug and a diaper change. Tell that to the people who lose their kids to the gangs. And that ain’t got nothing to do with the NYPD or police in general. When the bloods come sell drugs and guns from the apartment next door to you….don’t snitch. When they rob ya moms for the groceries she just bought don’t send them to jail – they were just hungry, so kindly understand. And next time you order Chinese food make sure to share so they don’t rob the delivery guy yet again. Yep Co-op is lucky to have residents who think like this – if that is actually where you live.

We obviously live in two different worlds and I am A-OK with that.

Yeah because US colonialism and imperialism has throughly ruined most of Africa, Asia, and Latin America through the mass expropriation of resources and the implementation coups that led to totalitarian governments there?

You clearly don't have any knowledge of history. Immigrants and refugees don't come to America because we are "free" they come mostly because of the poverty they experience in their countries. Don't get it twisted and think that America is the richest country because of some superior race or system. It is because America is built on colonizing and enslaving much of the rest of the world and stealing their resources.

As to internet censorship, America has a different approach. Instead of deleting stuff they simply monitor and build files and spy on you. If there is a change in political climate of course the government will take steps to censor political views. We have already seen this when people are arrested during social movements. Thousands of peaceful protestors were arrested during black lives matter and occupy Wall Street. During the Vietnam war, national guardsmen open fired on student protestors.

Funny, when I see video's all I see are people resisting arrest and escalating the situation to a point where sometimes deadly force is used to quickly de-escalate the situation.

Resisting arrest and getting you tube famous is apparently something people want to aspire to nowadays.

Haha...are you sure THAT is what you are seeing? Maybe those are fake/ edited videos LOL (yeah OK). According to some people here it must be a setup, as the gang in blue goes out every day to brutalize certain populations. The resisters are misunderstood and merely need a hug. We should allow them to do whatever they want because poor them. Because why shouldn't they resist, they don't have to listen to authority right? The police are all just big bad brutal criminals who are only looking out for private property HAHAHA man I tell ya what complete BS.

NYC is tossing a mountain of ‘broken windows’ warrants | New York Post

“Broken Windows” is getting smashed to pieces.

Starting next month, the city is tossing 700,000 old warrants seeking arrest for low-level crimes such as public urination, sources said — reversing decades of strict enforcement.

Mayor de Blasio, the NYPD and four of the city’s five district attorneys have signed off on the plan, which would apply only to warrants older than 10 years, according to a spokeswoman for
City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viv*erito, who has pushed for the amnesty.
