My garage has 5 or 6 guys w papers in with their last days all within next few months. And 2 on terminal . 3 guys who retired already this past nov/dec. So there are guys leaving, and my garage is somewhat senior. Only one guy had more than 20yrs who is leaving. . I predict they will hire this year just , just a matter of when and how many.

This is an excellent job, but TBH, theres def times I feel like this job is keeping me in NYC when I really would rather be somewhere else. I dont regret taking the job, but I def think about how my life woulda turned out if I left this city.

For those that are curious there is currently 714 employees at DSNY of all uniform ranks that started with the city in the year 2020.

That number includes people who may already be on terminal leave and also includes people who started at a different agency.

I dont think its in debate if the Dept would normally hire, to account for retirements etc. Of course they would. The real question is due to the pandemic are they going to suspend hiring (likely) and just cut functions, and go with lots of OT. Paying the existing workforce OT is still much cheaper than hiring a new employee. Its my personal opinion that with the upcoming budget cuts, and the continuing social distancing policies etc, hiring will not take place this year, but its all just a guessing game at this point. As usual, the advice is just be prepared for the call, but keep on living your life as if its not coming.

Guys waiting to be hired. If you don’t make it from this list. Unless you have 15-20 extra credit points you’re not getting hired off next test either. I’ll bet there are gonna five times the amount of applicants for next test. So think long term and plan accordingly. May be time for some of you guys to give up the dream and move on

I’ve only been on the job a year but I think about this all the time. The only thing keeping me going in sanitation is knowing I can retire in 22 years and then can live wherever I want, making as much as other people that work into their 60s while sitting on my ass.

I don’t know how you’re getting to the conclusion that people won’t be hired off next test from here. The difference of 1-2 more questions right can put these guys in the first thousand list numbers...not to say it won’t take a while still
