It will be real when they announce Trader Joe’s or Whole Foods in Mott Haven
Being a resident of Mott Haven, it's going to happen sooner rather than later. There is a lot more "clientele" in the area for sure. In a few more years (especially considering all of the "luxury" estates sprouting) there will be a demand for one.
And what they want, they want get. #FactsOnFacts
I had some friends visit last Friday, so we went out to eat at a place called La Morada in Mott Haven. They were asking me if I'm seeing any effects of gentrification. I said it's slow, but pretty much all that's happening is a rise of luxury condos and way more white people within the area.
We were in there for like an hour, and pretty much every customer that came in (out of about 15) were white.
In fact, TWO gay couples came in and sat down to eat. One couple was white the other couple was a white guy and black guy. Another couple with a baby (white man, black woman) then another couple (one white man one spanish woman)
Then you had my friends (Mexican couple.) I was so offended...
I'm the only dope sitting in there single.
I used to make jokes, but it's becoming a reality. When I first moved to Mott Haven 8 years ago you literally would not see any white people outside of a firefighter, police officer or rogue teacher. Now they can be spotted outside during broad daylight outside of working hours. Shopping at the market, getting OFF the train at 1:30 in the morning, eating in at local restaurants, jogging, a pregnant Becky walking through the Projects as if it's nothing!
That's what did it. Once I saw Becky (a very pregnant one at that) walking through the Projects at 7:00 on a Saturday evening, I knew Mott Haven was done. She probably had just left Day-Day house.

A lot of the white people that go to La Morada aee not from the neighborhood, the yelp reviews are filled with "I came all the way from Brooklyn and it was worth it!".
And interestingly the people at La Morada are anti-gentrification even though they play a part in it themselves.

Please... They are moving in there. There's no denying it. The original people in the community CANNOT afford to pay $2500 for a one bedroom, so naturally money is coming from outside of Mott Haven as people look to move there to be close to work or look for a deal in general since a lot of it is new construction or warehouses that were rezoned for residential.

Sure there are, but what I said is still true. That's a well known restaurant thay draws people from way outside the neighborhood (even de Blasio went there).

For a taco?! Omgggg... It just gets better and better.
I'm keeping an eye on the prices. My favorite restaurant Mexicozina has been creeping up in price little by little, and the portion is starting to get smaller and smaller. On top of that, they're the only restaurant I order from that has a $2.00 delivery fee. With how many times I order in a month, that's a whole meal with all those $2.00 delivery fees tacked on. La Morada might be taking over as my go to.
In 5 years time there may be high demand for that Whole Foods. I'm all for it, but we'll see.
To stay on topic, I know it's just another fast food chain, but I also welcome Shake Shack. All of this new stuff within reach is golden. As others said, it's way better than the Applebee's that was there. Only went once and was so unimpressed.

It's the Mole and Molcajete that draw people in! Most Mexican restaurants in NYC have the same menu more or less but La Morada has some uncommom dishes that people rave over.
It's likely getting more expensive for both places to do business there, due to increased ingredient costs and rising rents. I also disagree with the idea that it has to be cheap because it's Hispanic food (not accusing you of this).
And to my knowledge La Morada is closed on Sunday, I wonder how much longer they can afford to do that.
It's not the ghetto that this thread and many of you seem to imply, that's all.
Are you kidding me? All you need to do is walk two blocks EAST where you have your junkies and Meth heads. You must be walking around with blinders on, or you're in denial. 5th is generally nice (hello it's 5th Avenue!!) but the hood is only a few blocks away. Much of 125th east of 5th is rather trashy. Only recently have they been building things up. Hell it doesn't really get seedy on 5th until you are above 130th street.

The tacos are good, but it's a lot of the other dishes that are unique.
At least Shake Shack is a NYC-based chain, so it's likely that more of the money stays circulating in the city.
