Why are people leaving Staten Island?

I disagree with you on the traffic. We’ve debating this topic before. Leaving on summer weekends sucks. And coming back on holidays has always sucked. Getting worse? No way. The new Goethals made a huge dent in the summer/holiday traffic. The camera tolling even more. Absent an accident, traffic is definitely better than in the past.

Also, logically if “old school” Staten Islanders are leaving and their kids left already, who’s traveling south for holidays? The Brooklyn Russians and Chinese aren’t using the Outerbridge much. At least not yet.

Don't know "who" is on Outerbridge on Thanksgiving or Christmas; only know traffic is a CF. Quite honestly it starts on routes 1/9 and backs up into Jersey. Leaving from Manhattan I can beat my cousins from Island to Manalapan on some holidays.

Rarely take VNB as going through Jersey is faster for me; and avoids the hot mess that is BQE/Gowanus. Will give you that removing toll booths on SI side has sped up things. Few times have gone that way you notice difference even before leaving Bayridge as traffic isn't backed up like it used to be.
