Don't get angry at the police. They are enforcing the law, that's their job. The Court ordered and allowed her return. The police were there to prevent violence and ensure that the court order would be enforced peacefully. Protest to your representatives in Albany and City Hall who make these laws. Congress and the Assembly make the laws; the courts interpret the laws, and the police enforce the laws.
Oh, I totally agree. I'm just saying that precisely because laws are so stacked up against good citizens, police are also enforcers of an unjust system. Not their fault, of course...just that at this point they really have to do horrible things to keep their jobs and enforce laws made by crooked scumbag politicians in Albany.

"It's not illegal to rent out an extra bedroom in your own apartment. It's called having a roommate."

Not for less than 30 days if you're not present. Which appears from the article to have been the case on both counts. (If the lease was for longer than June, then it's not exactly shocking that the tenant wanted the lease she bargained for.)

Word of advice for people in this situation: if you can get out of the apartment, make sure to switch off all utilities like electricity and gas not under the tenant´s name and wifi too. Under NY laws, tenants are not entitled to electricity or gas in the kitchen. If at all possible, remove the fridge and the stove. I had to take proactive steps like that to finally have the Missouri redneck removed from my apartment. The marshal came, but by the time he came the squatter was thankfully gone after my "talk" with it...err, him.

Response: Opinion

All the advice ( except threatening ) is wonderful.
I hope many can learn from your experience.

I would consider a call to turn off ( if possible ) the hot water and
leaving just the cold water since it is your gas or electric that is heating it.

My next door neighbor was an elderly woman who lived alone but had dementia so the family hired an older Jamaican woman to live in as a caregiver. After a few years the caregiver brought a niece to live in the home and the niece eventually brought her son and two daughters, the niece’s young boyfriend (he was 18 and she was in her 40s) and the boyfriends of her daughters to live in the house. After a few more years the elderly woman died and her family couldn’t get rid of all those people living in the house and not paying rent. The caregiver had moved out long ago by this time so these were all strangers. They sold the house at a discount to an investor who I think got them to leave by paying them.
