Seventy-eight people in New York have been killed this year in traffic crashes, according to city data, putting 2024 on track to be the deadliest year since the start of the city’s Vision Zero traffic safety program in 2014.
The deadly statistics follow those of 2023, which had a particularly low rate of pedestrian deaths, the DOT said.
“We grieve for the loss of any life on our streets,” DOT spokesman Nick Benson told the Daily News. “After 2023, a year that saw near-record-low pedestrian fatalities and record-high production of protected bicycle lanes in New York City, we remain dedicated to our Vision Zero goals.”
The grim numbers prompted criticism of Vision Zero, the city’s initiative to improve street safety, from Transportation Alternatives, a cycling and safe-streets advocacy group.
Because Vision Zero gives people the false sense of security crossing the street on foot or bike. NYers are taught they have the right of way on any road regardless of situation. They will find out with their lives whether this risk is worth betting every time they cross the road without looking or thinking.
Doesn't matter if the speed limit is 20mph or 5 mph. It doesn't take much speed even at 2mph to knock and kill someone with a car that weights 2800-6000lb.
These government and DOT all failed at science or they simply don't care and they are making all issues a matter of collecting revenue rather than actually saving lives.
Even if NYC completely eliminated cars, bikers will still die from self inflicted accidents and pedestrians will die from being hit by bikes. This is all a tragedy created by ignorance.

People generally have become more selfish and self centered and don’t give a crap about anyone or anything, combined with everyone always being in a rush to go nowhere and already fired up and frustrated just causes them to be more reckless while driving.

what has happened is they lowered speed limits and now people who shouldn’t be driving do 15- 18 miles and hour and create dangerous situations for other drivers .
as well as waste everyone else’s time as now the light sequencing is off too . so it becomes a big time suck with these people who should stay off main roads and left lanes on highways

I think you hit the nail on the head. These politicians and technocrats are all about control, and using ideology to make people's lives miserable. They don't care about results. Nor do they care about economics. The fact is the private automobile has created the greatest freedom and prosperity for the most people that the world has ever known. Control freaks don't like that. They like to be like the little kid moving toy soldiers around on a board. I loved doing that at age four. It's not reality. Some people don't want to grow up. But they want to run the world.
Democrats are all liars and virtual signalers. They lie to the mentally weak that they're doing something by taking something away or stopping something which causes the frustration of the weak.
Take guns away and crime will go down.
Make everyone take mass transit and bikes and traffic deaths will go down.
Vision Zero created the idea that anybody can just walk in the middle of the street and no be afraid of traffic.
More pedestrians are dying from being hit by government vehicles such as ambulance, buses, garbage trucks because these workers are trying to do their job and you got entitled pedestrians that thinks they are entitled to walk in front of garbage trucks while turning.
Let these people pay with their lives that even at 5mph, people will die from a pickup truck.
People will die riding bikes because the roads are terrible, there are potholes everywhere and most bikers never obey any traffic lights or signs.
They will keep blaming cars while taking no responsibility because cars have to be insured while people riding bikes aren't and politicians will never take responsibility for the problem they've created because they are progressive they always find someone to blame rather than take responsibility.
