Unless it got delayed and I didn't know about it, I'm planning giving this a try. I still don't know how the "pay before you board" thing is going to work - especially for those with MetroCards.
I live near Co-op City anyway and I have to go to Tribeca on Sunday so I figured I'd take the "new Bx12" all the way to 207th and take the A down - see if it's so much faster as the MTA is pushing.
I may give it a spin as well. I could always use a shorter route to work, and this promises to cut a sizable chunk of time out of my commute. My big concern will be crowding, though. If I practically have to use a machete to get close to the door to get off the bus at my stop, I may just stick to the subways.
Just be aware that MTA is running shuttle buses between 207th and 168th, in lieu of the A train, most weekends.
I actually prefer the shuttle buses, because they run more often than the train, and I don't have to walk as far to get to them -- BUT -- it'll change your timing just a little .....
I saw some of the red paint and "BUS lane" lettering painted on Fordham road the other day.
I also saw a decent number of cars swerving into the bus lane or blocking it when traffic jams arose. So I wonder how sucessful this program will be short of putting concrete barriers in between the regular lanes and the bus lanes.
New York's first Bus Rapid Transit Line in the Bronx along Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway. If it works out - they're going to start popping up in the other 4 boroughs.
MTA NYC Transit - Select Bus Service (http://www.mta.info/nyct/sbs/sbs_stops.htm - broken link)
The east-west idea is long over due....and I think it will be a phenomenal success! It is somewhat similar to the "thru-streets" in NYC where the streets are geared to take you across town, and turns are restricted until a certain point. The express buses will serve the same purpose, providing faster crosstown "thruways". I hope they have more.

According to this, these are the ones that they are planning to do over the next 3 years:

Where and when will the SBS routes be implemented?
Fordham Road-Pelham Parkway - launches June 2008
34th Street Phase I Enhanced Bus Priority Corridor - Late 2008

I'm all for improvements in service, so I hope the BRT program goes well. However, I'm also wondering how TPTB will enforce these dedicated lanes?
Mead there is no doubt that since this is a new program that the lanes will be blocked at times....it is new and will take time before people are accustomed to the change. Let's revisit this in 2 years and see if the same problems occur...but for now we should expect that there will be some obstacles...that's normal.
