20 miles for a Breast Cancer walk. Started on the West Side Highway and somewhere in the 40s..went up to 144th street (maybe higher), and then walked all the way downtown to the Brooklyn Bridge. Went over the Bridge, walked in Brooklyn, and went over the Manhattan bridge. Then walked through Chinatown up to the 30s/40s on the East Side.

I can walk forever in Manhattan and don't get tired. I often walk 40+ blocks. I love walking around the city.

It's good to walk around in the city. There are plenty of characters to see. One of my favorite walks involved walking across the Brooklyn Bridge.

You couldn't possibly have been serious, could you? Or does nobody walk around in Philadelphia?

Walking is great, but I prefer bicycling.

From Union Square to the South Ferry Station, then all the way back up to Chambers St. Also, I am considering going on the AIDS walk next year, which I think is about 6 miles.

I am bending the rules a little here, but the walk that seemed the longest and strangest to me was this:

I had given birth to my daughter a few months before and realized my feet had grown a half size and none of my beautiful Charles Jourdan pumps, court heel suede t-straps from a store long gone, bright pink four inch heels, totally impractical but beautiful shoes, none of them fit anymore.

Thoughtful young New Yorker that I was then, I decided that I would donate these shoes to Catholic Charities. Surely some job seeker would be glad to pick up a pair of these shoes to complete that perfect job interview outfit. (I'm not kidding you here.)

I loaded my baby into her stroller, and shoved all the shoes underneath, and dangled two large Century 21 bags from the handles and made my way east from Nassau St. near City Hall in Manhattan to Catholic Charities somewhere in the depths of the lower east side.

I walked for what seemed like two hours, eastward eastward. I'd never seen lowrise neighborhoods like this in NY filled with families, quiet streets, food stores. It was a revelation. I never realized how far east this went.

I found Catholic Charities, let myself in, showed the ladies behind the desk my goods and watched their eyes widen in disbelief. They were nice enough to take my precious stash of used footwear without laughing at me.
