I don't advocate this as I don't want the police to arrest me, but one way the OP can achieve that end would be to say that he had an emergency back home, e.g., an ailing aunt, and that he needed to be there for her, and is now returning to America since she has either recuperated magnificently, or sadly, she has passed on.

Yeah, but he can't just get another 3 month extension to his tourist stay. They'd probably just extend the amount of days he went back to Australia.

i may be wrong but i do believe that on a multiple year tourist visa, one can apply to stay for six month intervals.
