It's hit or miss. Some are legit, some are hustlers. Moving company scams are big business in NYC - hidden fees, extortion, delays, misrepresentations, failure to provide services - very common. Always hire someone referred to you by someone you trust

I used these guys to move from Manhattan to Brooklyn.

Rob the Mover

Hired two guys and the hourly rate was reasonable, especially since I was on a tight budget.

To save time and money, I carried some of my stuff down to the truck, rode to Brooklyn in the truck's front seat (I'd told them in advance that I'd be doing this when I booked the move), and helped unload it at the new apartment.

One suggestion: Always request a truck that's bigger than the size you think you'll need. The move will go faster. They won't have to rearrange your stuff twenty times in order to fit everything inside. And you'll eliminate the risk of having to make an unexpected (and expensive) second trip.

Man with van services are definitely the way to go in NY. The cost is ideal and if you vet the reviews properly - you can meet some pretty awesome people. After getting quoted $800 for a studio move from a large moving company in brooklyn (and then watching them bail on me last minute), I booked a man with a van for $150 and have used them ever since. Not sure if I would go the Craigslist route though...

The services I have used, and would recommend (only in the NYC area):

Man With Van Exchange
City Move
College Educated Movers

If you want to use an unbonded mover of any type then you will get what you pay for.... I always found Big John's movers the best if you are moving within the city.

I always used someone from craigslist. Called them up and always got my moves done for 70 one time for a small studio move and 80 for a move to a 1 bedroom. I love man with a van,but im always careful when i do utilize craigslist. The guys i lucked up on,were usually workingmen with good full time jobs and did man with a van for, extra cash in there pockets

You'd think he'd use Bob, rather than Rob!
Good advice abut the truck size!

BBB is completely useless for finding a good business, it only tells you if there's been enough complaints to stay away

That Noah's Ark movers are con artists, I would stay away
