Why does everyone say going out to eat in New York City is so expensive? I've had meals in the city for under $10 - even dinners - and they were absolutely delicious. You can have Vietnamese, regional Chinese, Pakistani, Bosnian, Senegalese, and countless other cuisines and not pay much over $20 or even $10 / person. Even in Manhattan.

Everybody acts like if you go out to eat, than it HAS to be to a pretentious Japanese / "New American" / fusion restaurant with an "excellent" wine list. Why?

Who do you hang out with? My friends and I love finding cheap places to eat. One of my favs is a Venezuelan place where you can easily get a meal for like $10 bucks or so.

Some people don't have adventurous palates. Some people are insecure and want to impress a date or whatever. I agree that many ethnic cuisines are inexpensive and delicious. We used to go to a place called the Afghan Bread Kitchen on 9th Avenue in the 50's - not sure if it's still there. Cheap and delicious! There's an Ethiopian place in my nabe that's supposed to be good and very reasonable - haven't tried it yet.

I agree OP. This city has plenty of great affordable places to eat. We are heavily spoiled here compared to most places.

Mahmoun's Falafel on St. Marks has decent sized Falafel sandwiches for $2.50. Yes, $2.50.

Thanks,
I don't know if s/he is referring to this place, but it is rather inexpensive and I've found the food to be pretty good:

Caracas Arepas Bar
93-1/2 East 7th Street at 1st Avenue (East Village)

Not cheap places, unfortunately. For something a little pricier, Locanda Verde on Greenwich Street is a fantastic restaurant for any time of day (brunch, lunch, dinner).
