My family of 6 are considering a move. We have about $400-450,000 to spend on a 4 or more bedroom home. We definitely need good schools and in an area that is not depressing or economically going down hill. We would like to be within 1-2 hours of NJ. Would love a pretty area with rolling hills or distant views and a town center. I am open to anything, thanks in advance.

Orange county has plenty to offer in-line with what you're looking for. Schools seem to be subjective, I would recommend Minisink Valley. The area around it is pretty rural, yet close to just about anything you need. Downside is relatively high real estate/school taxes.
Hope this gets you pointed in the right direction...

I'd have to agree with Mark. In Rockland County that price tag probably wouldn't get you what you are looking for as far as Schools are concerned. In Orange County that price tag can get you a great home in a great school district and we have lots of rolling hills here. I would look into the Greenville Area with Minisink Schools, you can also look at Warwick which actually borders Jersey and (statistically speaking as per schoolmatch.com) has the best schools in the county and has some great deals available right now.

Good Luck in your search and don't hesitate to ask if you've got any area specific questions.
