I don't know if it is all true. I know someone who is a monitor on a bus and has a lot of time off. Yet that district has had a sign out for years.
Here's a novel idea. Walk to school, or ride a bike. I know there are a couple of towns that were designed so they didn't need buses. One is Davis California. There's one west of Cleveland.

You are referring to Lakewood OH, which is one of the top 100 most population dense municipalities in the country. I think for kids that live in or just outside of a village/city, walking or riding a bike makes sense and probably is preferred for a lot of those children. I think the issue will be with rural school districts or for those that live a good distance from their school.
Ironically, that same Saturday morning show(We The Parents of WNY from 10-11 am on Buffalo's WUFO radio) that I post every Saturday, has also discussed this, as it has been an issue in Buffalo in regards to picking up some children for school and getting them home. So, a 3 bell schedule has been proposed in order to get kids to school, but there has been some pushback from teachers due to prolonging their day. They have also discussed or considered going back to community/neighborhood schools as well.

It’s a rough gig.
It pays better now, hourly, but you don’t really get “full time” hours.
You gotta have a certain mindset & situation for this job.
