I've heard them up in the Adirondacks at night a few times. Not the best thing to be hearing out in the back woods (sounds like a small child is being murdered). My SO works up at Gore Mt in North Creek and he says he sees them every now and then up near the summit when he's grooming at night during the winter and he sees their tracks all the time up there.
Just wondering if anyone has had any sightings, paw prints or seen a dead deer or other in a tree?
Not trying to scare just wondering.
Bobcats are common upstate. Supposedly less common near the Great Lakes, maybe because it is open farmland?
Cougars (Pumas/Mountain Lions) are not supposedly in the state at this time but historically they were. People claim to see them from time to time but there is no proof as of yet. Also people maybe seeing a large Bobcat or even a Lynx.
The third cat is the Lynx. The state is trying to reestablish a population in the Adirondacks but I have not heard anything about it being successful yet.

They're supposedly not supposed to be there but they've been around for years. The DEC knows they're there but from what I've gathered no one wants to admit it officially because then the government will want to step in and establish regulations because of the animals (they're still considered endangered species in this area). And no one wants more regulations. Not to mention, if they're "not there" then stupid people (tourists and locals alike) won't go looking for them and cause more problems.
Was it the Lynx they tried to place in the area? Back in the 70s or 80s they released some of them into the wild (I think it was the Lynx), but from what I've heard, the area currently isn't a suitable habitat for them and they mostly died of natural causes and many of them were hit by cars.
My father in law saw one a few years back during the winter in the Old Forge area. He communicated it to ranger who admitted seeing mountain lion tracks.
^^ Yes, they are everywhere. But we are seeing more and more in Central Pennsylvania and less & less deer. These cats will wipe out a litter of deer like nothing. They need to be controlled soon.
Great pictures but that is not a pure mountain lion/cougar. It looks like a mix or cross breed of lynx and cougar or bob cat and cougar.
The long tail, white spot on the ear and solid color around the shoulders looks like a cougar. The face, spotted fur and heavy fur on it side looks like lynx or bob cat.
Sad, it's sort of like the polar bear mating with grizzly's in Alaska.
