Does anyone know anything about (or live in/near) Troy, NC? We are thinking about transferring there for school. I understand it's a small town (which is fine with me!!!!). What major city is it close to?
Hubby and I have considered driving over and staying at a B&B or hotel one weekend to get a feel for the city!
I lived about 10 miles from Troy for a number of years and attended West Montgomery High School for a couple of years. The closest major city is Greensboro about 60 miles away to the north.
Montgomery is an economically depressed rural county. About 23% live in poverty. The unemployment rate in May 2012 was higher than the state's average rate.
So not the best place to move to huh? My husband is wanting to transfer to the school over there to learn the art of gun-smithing. I'm completely for it, but we will have a little one by then and I know that we will need to have jobs set up before we move!

There's the Duck Smith B&B in Seagrove, about 14 miles away, The Inn at Eagle Springs in Biscoe about 12 miles away, and a couple motels in Troy. Seagrove is known as the pottery capital of NC, so there are other craftsmen around. Further away is Asheboro, a larger town.
I had never heard of the gun-smithing school in Troy, and it sounds interesting.
Take a good look at Albemarle and Asheboro when you are there and picking a place. They are small cities about 20-30 mins away, but at least have a mix of commercial centers to shop for things. Troy is a very small town with few services, and little is open after weekday daytime business hours.

There's very little there, but it's a beautiful area. It's in the Uwharrie National Forest, about an hour south of Greensboro (via US 220/I-73), and about the same distance east of Charlotte (via NC 24/27). If you have any interest in outdoor activities, you'll like the area.
Using the internet to view a Map of Troy, NC would help. It is not close to Greensboro, its closer to Charlotte.
In the middle of nowhere, you may find peace and quiet.
Does anyone know if Time Warner services the Troy area for cable tv and internet? Does anyone know how good the Verizon cell service is out there?

The Verizon service is spotty , due to topography. I was out there Saturday , and couldn't get good service. The one call I received kept dropping. As for TWC , I don't know , they may service that area.
