Are there many snakes in North Carolina? My fiance and I are moving and I do not like the idea of snakes at all and have been told they can be found in and around your house. Is this true?

Copperheads rein supreme in the snakes category around NC. I'm not sure if they are poisenous, but I know there are a lot of 'em.

Ringneck Snake (Diadophis punctatus)

Southern Hognose Snake (Heterodon simus)
Mole Kingsnake (Lampropeltis calligaster)

Queen Snake (Regina septemvittata)
Pine Woods Snake (Rhadinaea flavilata)
Carolina Swamp Snake (Seminatrix pygaea)
Brown Snake (Storeria dekayi)
Redbelly Snake (Storeria occipitomaculata)
Southeastern Crowned Snake (Tantilla coronata)
Eastern Ribbon Snake (Thamnophis sauritus)
Garter Snake (Thamnophis sirtalis)
Rough Earth Snake (Virginia striatula)
Smooth Earth Snake (Virginia valeriae)
Eastern Coral Snake (Micrurus fulvius)
Copperhead (Agkistrodon contortrix)
Cottonmouth (Agkistrodon piscivorus)
Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake (Crotalus adamanteus)
Timber Rattlesnake (Crotalus horridus)
Pygmy Rattlesnake (Sistrurus miliarius)

You can reduce the likelihood of their presence near your residence by removing items they might use for shelter – or which their prey might use -- such as scrap sheet metal, boards, woodpiles and similar debris. Raising materials off the ground promotes dryer storage and attracts fewer critters. When woodlands and other plant communities are nearby, eliminating the possibility of a snake is virtually impossible.

Only if there's plenty of live food available such as mice or other small rodents. If you live in the Piedmont region of NC, the only harmful ones are the Copperhead and Cottonmouth everything else in the Piedmont is harmless. Most of the Cottonmouth's territory is in the Eastern Plains region.

Oh sure

We lived in a subdivision the first year we were here. One day I happened to be looking under the deck for some reason or other when I noticed a papery object. Crawled under to pull it out and found a snakeskin that measured about 4 ft long I couldn't tell what species it came from, just laid it on the deck rail for Dh to check out. I thought that was kinda neat

Another time (different house, still in town) I noticed my Molly cat playing with a long black stick. She was scooping it up with one paw, dropping it, and then batting at it. I'd never seen her display such behavior, so I walked over and said "whatcha got, Mollikins?" and took it away from her. It wasn't until I had the "stick" in my hand that I noticed how mobile it was. Turns out it was a baby black snake.

Critters don't bother us, it's one reason for moving into a rural area: we'd rather have animals around us than people Our only negative critter experience was a hostile woodchuck who tried to stake a claim to our trash bins. I wasn't going to have any of that, so it was a fierce battle of wills before I let him know that we weren't going to be his food supplier.

Just live in the city and you'd not be likely to find many at all.
