Dawne, I'm a self-employed transcriptionist as well, for two internet companies. Sometimes the work can get really slow, though. Would you mind sharing with me what local agencies hire transcriptionists?

When we were assembled in a conference room and were asked to individually introduce ourselves to our peers and potential new managers, I could only grimace as person after person said things like "I'm an MBA", "I'm trilingual", "I run into burning buildings daily to save babies." I did manage to turn things to my advantage though when I mentioned my hometown of Pittston's claim to fame as being the "World's Quality Tomato Capital" and elicited chuckles from others in the room.

I knew the career outlook for accountants in NEPA was bleak, but I never in a million years could have anticipated that even after passing through two prior screenings and making the cuts there were still so many others at the interview vying for just two open positions. It's frightening, really, to imagine having to commute daily into NJ in the future.

I wish you the best of luck. And hey, if you don't get hired at this firm, why not just start your OWN firm one day?

I am a planetarium director at a museum here in Virginia. I was a science teacher for nearly 30 years in my current district.

That's awesome. I've always wanted to visit a planetarium. I really hope the proposed science center in Downtown Wilkes-Barre gets off the ground soon; you can relocate back to "duh valley" to direct it.

Thanks, EnyaGirl. I wouldn't want to branch out with my own firm until I've established a notable reputation for myself as a CPA with a larger firm. I may eventually open my own firm downtown somewhere (or partner with a colleague) when I'm in my 40s, assuming a global apocalypse post-peak oil warfare doesn't occur by then!

A planetarium, maybe part of a kids' science museum, would be great for this area...kind of like the Franklin Institute in Philly. The only planetarium I know of in this area is in the West Scranton Intermediate School, and its not open to the public as far as I know...but a lot of the Scranton elementary schools usually have field trips there.

There used to be one in the Everhart Museum when I was growing up. It was a very small one, but I remember it...(I think). My old physics teacher used to run the WS Int. one. He used to teach in Mid Valley.

I remember seeing that way back in the late 70's. It used to have a drop down curtain around a sunken area under the dome...again I think I remember it...could be confused again.

They are building a new planetarium at my old college in East Stroudsburg. I was holding out hope that the alumni assoc. would have a lot of pull and bring me on there, but they are staffing it from within the physics department at ESU.

THere is a thought! My dear wife has become too acclimated to the mid south. She is not a fan of the cold and snow anymore, actually don't think she ever was.

Do you study the tax code at all in the accounting program?

I have a tax law final coming up. I'm not a "tax guy," so it's quite possibly the worst class ever.

Yes. Our tax accounting professor is extremely relaxed though, so I actually find learning about tax law to be quite enjoyable. It's certainly much more interesting than cost accounting. BLECH!
