deeds,
I live in Pocono Township. I can tell you that East Stroudsburg has one of the fastest rising school taxes in Monroe County. I can also tell you that Route 209 can be a nightmare for any commuter. I don’t know the reasons that you want to locate to that area or if you have already purchased property there? If you are retired and have not purchased any land; you might want to reconsider. There are many beautiful areas of our state that have lower taxes and better crime rates and living conditions.
However, if you are already committed; good luck. There are many things to do in the area and the National Park is very close.

Traffic can be a nightmare on 209...and crime has been an issue recently....I would look elsewhere.

Fisheye, you mention that there are many beautiful areas of PA that have lower taxes. Can you give me an idea of some of those places that are within about 30-45 minutes of Allentown? We live in So. Calif. and our plan is to relocate to the Lehigh Valley sometime before the end of this year so that we can be close to my mother-in-law and my mother.

If there is anyone else out there that knows of some of the lower-tax areas, please don't hesitate to chime in. Thanks much.

Rosanne, You should ask about the Lehigh Valley on the Lehigh Valley forum.

Rosanne,
You might want to check out the Jim Thorp area. I have a friend at work that claims that he is paying only a fraction of my taxes. I think that is in Carbon County? It is also a very scenic area of our state. It pays to do your homework. Check the schools and check the commute to malls and stores - of course you could buy your supplies in the Allentown area. Keep in mind that higher elevations usually get more snow. You can probably find out the elevation of any potential home on Google Earth. Roads in the hills, with plenty of turns, can be treacherous in the winter. Generally speaking; the ABE area has milder winters than we do (especially in northern Monroe County).
There are plenty of good hospitals and lots of malls in the ABE area.

Yes, fisheye gave you some good advice. Also, you might want to look into Forks, PA......
Right now there are a lot of good prices in some wonderful communities. There you will be close to Allentown and all the shopping in Phillipsburg, and Palmer and the great stores along 248.
Being in that area puts you by all the Malls and also by the ABE Airport which is a great asset to the surrounding area. The best of hospitals and good doctors. Best of luck to you.
