I will soon be transferring for a job near Fairfax and know nothing about the area. Can anyone recommend a nice area with less than 30 minute commute to ExxonMobil? I'm looking to rent a townhouse or apartment less than $2000 and be in an area with a younger crowd (~30's). Close to shopping/grocery/parks a plus too. If you know of any areas to NOT live in let me know that too. Thanks.

You have hit paydirt. Exxon Mobil is right in the middle of a large, tending toward upscale area that is defined by being close to shopping, groceries, and parks (and lots of other stuff too) and that is full of 20- and 30-somethings living in TH's and apartments for 2000/mo or less. You could meet all those requirements and bike to work in 15 minutes or less.

Burke, W. Springfield, Dunn Loring, Merrifield, Kingstowne, Shirlington, Fairlakes. Most are sections of Fairfax County. Generally avoid areas where you have several miles of driving in the direction of the rush periods ("hour" is meaningless anymore) traffic. Therefore I'd avoid a drive that requires you to spend time on I-66 (e.g., Centerville), long stretches of the Beltway (e.g., Alexandria), and I-95 from the south (e.g., Woodbridge).
