We used to live in Herndon and there is definitely a distinction between upscale Oak Hill (zip code 20171) and Herndon (zip code 20170).

There is definitely a distinction. I loved the Chantilly Highlands/Franklin Farm area, but nothing good was available in our price range at the time we were looking. There was one house that had potential that we went back to a couple times, but ultimately wound up in Greenbriar.

Most of the elementary schools in that corridor are quite good (Fox Mill, Crossfields, Navy, Oak Hill, Lees Corner). We wound up just a little further down the Parkway in Greenbriar, which I ultimately liked best because of the easy access to all 3 public schools that are rated pretty highly and the shopping center right down the road. Oak Hill ES area mostly tracks to Chantilly HS, if I remember correctly, which is in my neighborhood.

We are looking at Chantilly or Herndon or maybe Reston or Centreville. Initially my budget was $1.5k but I think I will up it to $2k. Would like to lower it since I want save up to buy. Any suggestion on those area subdivision to live in? Technically i think I can afford up to $400k but I don't want to go that high..maybe mid to high $200s

Also, I will depending on Metro to go to work..

Thanks everyone for the help. I will def. be looking into the Oak Hill area. It seems to be getting a lot of good feedback and the location does seem pretty great also. Very helpful stuff.
