I recently got a job on the Hill, and I live in Haymarket. What does the typical commute look like if I were to drive into DC during the summer months (July/August)? Would it be better to take the Metro at Vienna? What would be the approximate travel times to and from for either of these methods?

Define brutal...Is it a 2 hour commute each way? or more? Does it get better in July or August?

Yes, 90 mins to 2 hours is pretty accurate.

I'd recommend you move to Vienna or somewhere closer to DC.

Your summer commute will be infinately better than the other seasons. If it is just for two months, you'll be able to do it. Once fall and winter comes, it might be completely unbearable unless you leave at 5 am.

Where in DC are you going?

(as an FYI, I go from Middleburg to DC - for the last 4 years - and am fine with the commute. But I don't have to deal with 66 or downtown.)

Your post is encouraging

I'm trying to get to Capitol Hill, so I'd be getting off at Union Station on the Metro.

How long does your commute take? After being gone for over 15 years I am moving back to NoVA and absolutely love Middleburg...not that I can afford it right now but there is always hope. My parents were good friends with a couple who owned a historic inn near Middleburg and so I've always romanticized living there.
My commute in AZ is 50 miles and it takes me about 1 hour 15 minutes each way. Phoenix does have amazing infrastructure so the road are creme de la creme! I am actually tentative about moving only because of the temporary decrease in the level I am accustomed to living here In AZ. I have 55OO sq ft home that was purchased in the $400k's and a gigantic lagoon pool with plenty of other amenities. Don't suppose the places there be what I am accustomed to here.

Summer months will be better but once school is back in - a different story. Why even drive to the Vienna Metro when you can take the VRE from Bristow (Broad Run) to Union Station?

The biggest factor is what time you leave. Unless, it's really early, count on at least 45 minutes to Vienna metro. I wouldn't even attempt to drive all the way as accidents occur daily. I would really consider taking VRE. Much less stressful.

Ny husband does the drive every morning into DC, he leaves around 5:15 am and is there within the hour. Coming home is a different story, usually take him 1hr 1/2, sometimes longer.
