I work in Herndon and Commute to Winchester. I take VA 28 N and 7 West. Anytime between 4PM and 7PM on that route is a mess with Ashburn traffic on both 28 and 7. I know I can skip all that by taking Dulles Greenway but that is way too expensive. Is there any other route that helps me atleast skip some part of that route?

28 to Waxpool which becomes Farmwell Rd, which becomes Ashburn Farm rd which becomes Sycolin Rd, which will take you to Leesburg where you can get on 7. I'm not sure that that's any better than just taking 7.

I wonder if using Dranesville rd to 7 would be easier than using 28?

Depending on where you are coming from in Herndon, you can take the Herndon Parkway to Old Ox Road to Pacific Blvd where you can get to Waxpool and Loudoun County Parkway. I live in the opposite direction, so I don't know how backed up those roads get in the evening, but I know 28 N is pretty congested until you pass Waxpool Rd.

Waxpool to Sycolin isn't a cake walk. Something like thirteen traffic signals in about a four mile stretch and it's the only free way in and out of Ashburn so volume is probably worse than Route 7 at rush hour.

Also you cant access Rt 7 from Sycolin Rd in Leesburg anymore now that the new overpass is done. You will have to run right onto Battlefield Pwky to Rt 7 or left on Battlefield Pwky and turn right at the next light and get in line with the cars at the end of the Dulles Greenway (No toll for you on this part).

Not really. You're pretty much sc##### like the rest of us. As a former Loudoun-ite myself, I tried just about every route. It's all bad during rush hour. You either pay the high Greenway toll, pay the toll by beating your head on the steering wheel on Rt. 28 and Rt. 7, pay the toll by beating your head on the steering wheel as you crawl from light to light through the neighborhoods, or move to Herndon. Nobody rides for Free!!
