Snow? Not much. The snow that we do get melts during the day then freezes at night which causes problems first thing in the morning. Schools may have 2 hour delay but very few snow days. Western VA counties will have more snow days due to rual roads, hills, valleys and mountains.

Advise: When it does snow or we have ice STAY OFF THE ROADS, particularly the BeltWay!! This area is so transient many, many people have no clue how to drive in these conditions!!!

Very good advice. The roads aren't so bad, but some of the drivers are. Be really careful if the schools declare a snow day. In some areas, you'll see kids sliding down sloping driveways and into the street. The parents can't get time off from work to supervise, and it's harder to see them when it's snowing. Drive slowly.

I had a close call driving down a side street years ago when a little girl slid right in front of my car. Also people tend to let their dogs out to take care of business, instead of taking the dog for a walk. Dogs may gravitate to the plowed roads, so watch out for them, too.

Last, whenever I drive down 95 in march everything is a bit more green than DC. I think with all this evidence I have supplied proves DC is NOT milder than Richmond.
I was talking about low temps and NOT average temps or high temps. That's what the USDA zone maps refer to. So yes, DC low temps are not as cold as Richmond for the most part. Yes, Richmond may have a higher maximum temp, but it gets colder for low temps in Richmond that DC.

Pull any data you can and you will see that for the most part DC low temps are not as cold as Richmond. AGAIN, I"M TALKING LOW TEMPS and not HIGH temps.

I don't disagree with you on this at all. I know Tucson is way milder than DC. It's probably way milder than Myrtle Beach which is over 300 miles south of DC. I have no clue why it's listed in zone 8. I thought it was zone 9 at least.

I think DC is Zone 7. Richmond starts Zone 8.

I still disagree that Palm trees can thrive in harsh cold climates. They would never live in New England.

We have Palm Tress in SE Virginia- that do pretty well and in Richmond. DC is pushin' it.

Good catch: Tucson is actually Zone 9...............Globe, Kingman, Sedona, etc. here in Arizona are Zone 8.

Now for ironic: Prescott has almost identical temps day by day to Wash DC with the exception of the winter highs being 8-9 degrees warmer.

Prescott

Wash DC

Okay everyone - I know DC is in zone 0 and Richmond is in zone 11. I know it's colder in DC during the winter than it is in Antarctica, and Richmond has similar weather to South Florida.

But according to this revised map DC and a small part of Nova is listed in zone 8 and Richmond, VA is listed in zone 7. I think this map is based on the last 15 years of recorded low temps. You can use the zoom tool in Adobe Acrobat to zoom in on area to see full details.

These people should be ashamed of themselves for putting DC in zone 8 and Richmond in zone 7. This is crazy because Richmond VA is tropical paradise with palm trees all over the place.

Here is the link to the map on the American Horticultrual Society:

Use the zoom tool to see details.
