I'm looking into joining a warehouse club nearby (BJs, Sam's, Costco). I live and work in Herndon. I'd be purchasing mostly household dry goods (toilet paper, trash bags, coffee, lotion, etc.). Any recommendations for value, variety, low membership and hopefully somewhere that takes manufacturer coupons? Thanks!

I would rate Costco as #1 for selection.
They tend to refresh their non-food items often.

My second Choice would be Sam's club, they have better fruit/veggi selection at times vs. Costco.

Closest to Herndon warehouses are Sams and Costco, both in Sterling.

BJ's takes manufacturer coupons, and Costco does not, but there is no BJ's near Herndon. You'll have to head south to Centreville.

Yes, there is a Costco in Sterling, but it's not a stone's throw from Herndon so you won't be going there during your lunch break.

You know what, when I price the two Costco ends up being cheaper than BJs' even when you factor in the coupons. Costco is a good deal (except for tooth paste. I don't know why, but tooth paste and coca cola are the two things they charge too much for.

Best time to go to Costco in Sterling is before noon, or at 2:30. Sometimes I've been there during the 2:30-3:30 lull and had a cashier with nobody at all in line.

I love the Costco in Sterling. The one in Fairfax is always packed. It's a very nice Costco. I cannot compare it to the other warehouse clubs. In general, some things are cheaper than buying at the supermarket, and some things are not. You just have to know your prices.

They just announced on the news that Target will be selling bulk items and generally acting like a warehouse club for the next month. Could be a good way to get the advantge of Costco if you don't have a membership.

I would go to the SuperTarget and Walmart Supercenter in Dulles. You can get bulk items at both stores as well as the regular quantities. In addition, the SuperTarget is next door to Wegman's. The Sam's Club and Walmart Supercenter are in the same shopping center across from the Dulles Town Center shopping mall.

The Costco's in Chantilly (28 & 50), Fair Oaks (Reston Parkway), and Sterling are all relatively close to Herndon. There's a BJ's in Fairlakes near the Costco and the Fair Oaks Wegman's.

Whoops, I meant to say I love the Costco in Chantilly - not Sterling. I've never been to that one. It's not too far from Herndon.

I live in KC and will likly be relocating to the Reston/Herndon area this year, I can't comment on location or BJ's for that matter (as we don't have those here in the midwest). From my experience tho the number one reason I love Costco is thier "Kirkland" generic brand. I always love the quality of the "Kirkland" household goods (TP, paper towels etc).

I am in Reston, and we've been using the Sterling Costco for as long as I can remember. We have had nothing but great experiences with them. Their bakery is amazing, and we now use them for special occasion cakes. Their electronics department is excellent, and we purchased a 42" Vizio HDTV from them for Christmas of 2008 (Which has been problem free, and works beautifully), as well as a Panasonic Blu-Ray Player (Which btw, was $200 at Costco, meanwhile it was selling for $400 at stores such as Best Buy). They have a great repair/return policy on these devices, and you really couldn't ask for much more. I was impressed with the knowledge of their tech department too, as I myself am heavily into electronics and technology, and therefore I am not fooled by any detailed talking points. They knew their stuff though, and they didn't try to sell me on more expensive sets (To the contrary, they gave honest advice).

Consumer Reports also ranks Costco as the top "Warehouse Club".
