Hi All!

My husband and I are relocating from Phoenix to NoVA this summer. My husband's work is going to be based out of Reston but he will primarily be travelling so he needs to be in proximity to an airport. I am still job-hunting in the software industry and assume that when I find something, it will most likely be in the DC city. We are looking to buy a home which would be a convenient commute to both job requirements (about 30 minutes) and at about 500k. We are also looking for good school districts and a safe, clean and family friendly community.

Am I hoping for too much? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!!

I would not make that assumption. There is probably more for you here in NOVA, around Tysons Corner and the Dulles Airport area.

I agree, Northern Virginia is where the software jobs are.

Yeah, there's very little in the way of IT/Tech within DC or within 3-5 miles unless you happen to work for a government agency or a defense contractor. Otherwise, you're likely to be in Reston area as well. $500k would get you a pretty nice house in Herndon. You should also be able to find a decent amount of stuff in Reston, Vienna, or Merrifield. The only places it would be difficult to find something would be Great Falls, McLean or the Rosslyn/Courthouse/Clarendon/Ballston corridor. Aside from that you have a lot off options, depending on what you're looking for. If you value proximity to metro, then you should look in vienna, merrifield or falls church.

If you do get a job in DC, then I'd recommend Vienna as well. The commute would be reasonable for both of you and housing prices are in your target range. Schools are solid and the area is a nice community for families.

But as others have said, if software is your field, you're actually more likely to get a job in Northern Virginia. Which would give you many more options - you can do well here for $500K, especially if you don't need to worry about the DC commute.

You should be very happy in Reston. It has some nice trendy areas and it is real close to the Washington Dulles Airport.

Sandy, Reston and Herndon seem to have many of the software jobs. Also Ashburn. Raytheon just announced they are moving to Ashburn and thus hiring lots of IT employees.

Why not rent for the first few months until you get your job. And by then you will know the area better and you'll know which places appeal to you.

Welcome to NOVA.

I've heard Janelia Research Center is going to do a lot of hiring. That's in Ashburn or maybe Leesburg (I'm never sure where the border is). Anyway, about 5-10 miles from Dulles Airport.
