Hi there, I'm relocating next month from CA and am worried about insects (I hate them with a passion), especially mosquitos. How bad are mosquitos in the area? I'd be living in McLean. Having never been near them except for one summer in which they drove me crazy, I'm a bit concerned. Are they worse depending on weather, or what? Thanks in advance for your responses.

I moved from Southern California (Los Angeles) and was surprised by how many insects I encountered in Nova my first year. It seemed infested! But that was just because I was used to a desert climate.

Now that I've been here a few years I hardly notice them. Anyway, to answer your question, it's much worse in many other states, but yes you will definitely have mosquitos here.

Some of the associations near me have greatly reduced the numbers of mosquitos in recent years. It's because of a spraying program that started when West Nile Virus was a concern. It's not really a concern anymore but they still spray. I'm sure there are many other neighborhoods in Fairfax, Loudoun and PW County that do the same.

It may drive you crazy the first year but you get used to it. And the good news is, you may have to put up with mosquitos but you also get fireflies!
