In Virginia you can make a right turn on red, unless specified by a condition, or a no tun on red sign

for those that didnt know, or somehow wasnt tested at the DMV

We can make a right turn on red after a stop here in NM too, we could also do that in TX.

you have to come to a complete stop, then proceed while yielding

UNLESS it says no right hand turns when red or no right hand turns within a specific time

There is right turn on red in every state unless signs are present prohibiting it.

Except (apparently) in New York City.

Right turn on red - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"All turns on red (left or right) are forbidden in New York City unless a sign is posted permitting it."

Also,

"In some states, including California and New York, a right turn on red is prohibited when a red arrow is present."

So a right turn on a "regular" red light is OK, but not on a red arrow. Interesting.

^^^ That is interesting.

I've never even seen a red arrow on a traffic signal (being from VA).

Really? There seem to be quite a few here in Alexandria.

You MAY turn right on red (unless prohibited),....you are not REQUIRED to.

If, as I suspect, you were behind someone that elected not to turn right on red....TOO BAD!

(Metrobuses even have a decal on the back that says "This vehicle does not turn right on red")

You can also turn left on red, if turning from a one way street onto another one way street.

Thank you for posting this, so many in NOVA don't seem to aware of our laws here, particularly the FOB's.

Not to be racist, or hoping not to sound racist, but what is it with Asian women driving mini vans and the small SUV's? They are horrible in parking lots, back out without looking, and so many refuse to turn right on red. Heaven forbid if there's a sign that says pedestrians have the right of way, they seem to think this means "never turn right on red" and they won't, no matter what. The line of cars behind them can honk until the cows come home, but nothing will make them turn right. Is it a cultural thing? Do they drive like this in Asian countries?
