I would like suggestions/advice please:

We are moving to NW Ind. in summer of 07, but starting to investigate areas now-will be visiting in 2 weeks. Two of my sons who have grown up in N. Texas are devastated about move; my teenagers are remaining in Texas. Boys will be 5th and 8th grade. They are involved in Boy Scouting, YMCA activities and youth group with our Baptist church. We prefer public schools over private; have college educations; prefer older, settled communities. Education is priority, and I fear this is a critical social time in a pre-teens life, so would like kids to be in a school that is not too small so that they 'stick out'. So far, the community that appears to fit our needs would be Crown Point. I would like any input! If there are any other areas that would be worth investigating, we would like to know. My husband will be driving into far southern Chicago to work.

I graduated from Crown Point, its a fine school. The City of Crown Point is nice. You can choose from Victorian homes to new homes to buy.

Lake Central is a good High School as well, but that would put you over in the Route 41 area which is very congested. Towns in the LC School district would include St John and Schererville.

CP & LC are good choices. Both have lots of kids moving into the school district, so your children won't stick out. I wish you luck and I hope your boys will do well. You should be able to do all the activities you are currently doing. Get used to being in a very Catholic area. You'll find all faiths represented, but Catholics are predominant ... at least they were when I lived up there.

Indiana, by and large, is a very homogenous state, but NW Indiana still has a lot of ethnic flavor from all the eastern europeans who immigrated to the area long ago.

Default Lake County

If you want to get a jump on searching for real estate, check out gniarmls.com. Crown Point, academically speaking, is a great school system. The county itself, however, is rife with corrupt politicians (particularly the northern 1/2 of the county) and is still attempting to solve a property tax dilemma that has existed for 5+ years.

We have our fair share of corrupt politicans here in N. Texas. The only other living option would be in Illinois, and I have been told the cost of living is much higher than N. Indiana.

Property taxes in Illinois are sky-high compared to Indiana, as well as sales tax.

You'd be better off in Indiana. IMHO

That's what I tell people in Illinois all the time, but they feel insulted like you are suggesting that they move to Timbuktu.
