That must explain the record 5.4 million US visitor arrivals to Hawaii in 2014 - us white folks just love a good harassing.

Well it's different if you're a tourist. They still want your money, after all. They just don't want you to live there.

I fell in love with my Hawaiian coworkers and neighbors. I was only there a year but there was very little obvious anti-haole sentiment. Of course, I smile a lot.

Not sure what pay scale you're on - not seeing a GS position that fits those numbers. If you're talking gov't then it takes more than a few years to top out.

You're so well established in Seattle, why uproot? It will be hard to fit back in after being away for a couple of years. What field are you in?

The people you heard from are clearly arrogant. They're just too dumb to realize it. Locals don't like arrogant people of any race but that's pretty much the case anywhere on the planet.

There's no truth to this. I'm a pale-skinned white girl and have lived in Hawaii for five years and have never been harassed. There are a couple of posters on is forum who have harassed me more, and that's not even to my face!

I would say there's some truth to it as I've seen harassment based on skin color (in Hawaii and elsewhere) but I think what should be emphasized is that these incidents are the exception to the rule. At least in the US, if you show respect people won't bother you, for the most part.

This is a true statement.
I have lived on Oahu off and on for 30 years. Most in Uncle Sam’s canoe club .
That is the way i approached living on the Islands. Have nor had any issues with anyone on Oahu, or the other Islands i visited.

What is your major for your masters degree? What type of job are you seeking? How much does that job pay in Seattle? Most jobs pay less in Hawaii, some jobs, drastically less. The cost of living is about 25% higher in Honolulu the Seattle. If the job in Hawaii is a large effective pay cut, are you willing to accept that effect pay cut?

I live in Seattle and was just back in Hawaii (Oahu and Kauai) this last winter for the first time in 23 years. I lived in Maui for a year back in 1992. Frankly I wasn't that crazy about it. Hawaii has become too touristy, too expensive and it's lost it's unique cultural appeal IMO. Aloha is pretty much gone. I kind of found it a bit of a boring, bland place now. If you do not look Asian or Pac Islander you will be treated differently and like an outsider. It isn't something that will necessarily cause you issues, but there is a slight "undercurrent" of racism there if you don't look Asian or Pac Islander. You'll see a lot of locales that are like wannabe thugs. The REAL native Hawaiians can actually be pretty cool (but there are very few native Hawaiians left). 95% of the population is not native Hawaiian, but they act like they are even though they themselves immigrated there themselves at one point. Traffic is bad on Oahu. Traffic was pretty bad on Kauai too. Cost of housing is terrible. Food isn't that great compared to Seattle. Customer service levels can be atrocious (and come with attitude).

The beaches are still incredibly beautiful and it is still a incredibly beautiful place no doubt, and has some lovely winter weather (when Seattle is chilly, dark and drizzly). But I have little interest in even going there on vacation anymore. To me it just feel too trampled by tourists and feels too bland. Too many other places much more interesting culturally I'd rather go.

Seattle is a far, far superior place to live overall to live in so many ways. King County (Seattle) actually has like a 3.7% unemployment rate I think. I can't understand why you can't get a job. This city is booming beyond belief.
