Minford is mostly rural. If you're looking for a country setting and country folks, it's the place to be. That being said, it's not the most open minded area. If you're not a same race, opposite sex couple with christian values, or if you could ever be described as even remotely "progressive minded" you probably want to avoid that area alltogether. It's very bible belt, but in the old time, talk about the new guy in town way. Trust me. My parents were divorced and I lived half my childhood in Portsmouth and the weekends and some summers in minford. Aside from the people, the schools are pretty good, but you have to drive at least 30 minutes to find anything to do. 20 min. to walmart even.
Now to Portsmouth. I am biased. I love this town. Yes, it has areas that are riddled with crime, but EVERY TOWN IN THE WORLD DOES. People like to only focus on that part of portsmouth because, in the past, it's been the most dominant characteristic. But times they are a changin.
Business wise, and for the first time in years, portsmouth is growing. Not just larger business, but small, funky independent stores have popped up along 2nd street, there is a new cinema that's great, the hospital is absolutely top notch having improved drastically over the past 5 years, the schools are all less than 5 years old and completely state of the art, and most of all.......there is a sense of community. There are little festivals throughout the year, bands play in tracy park, riverdays. It's small town entertainment but it has alot of charm.
There are also some streets with $250,000 homes that are tree lined with amazing nieghbors, and there are some streets with $50,000 homes that have great neighbors. You just have to know what streets to stay away from.
Sorry so long. I just hate that all anyone hears about portsmouth is the negative. It has alot to offer if you know where to look and avoid certain areas. Just like everywhere else, except with alot more charm and history.
