I have friends who live in a nice, family-oriented community in HB and other friends who live in The Enclave in Costa Mesa--we're all in our mid-30s. The Enclave is a great place for young singles or young couples. There are parts of HB that would work too--downtown is one place that comes to mind. It's more of a matter of personal preference, lifestyle, and budget.

I like Costa Mesa for the shopping and food (South Coast Plaza, The Lab, The Camp and tons of great Japanese food) and I like HB for the proximity to the beach and the cool shops/restaurants downtown. In the end, I do find myself in Costa Mesa more often than HB.

if you like shopping, theatre, japanese culture: Costa Mesa (South Coast Metro)
If you want the beach and beach culture: Huntington Beach (but stay within one mile of PCH, or in the downtown area)

hmm thanks guys.
Well, I'm korean.. But I heard around the Enclave apartment area by the mall there's a lot of nice restaurants and bars and a couple of clubs... I also heard there's a couple of decent hang out places in Santa Ana..

I'm guessing Huntington beach is more expensive..

There's a huge Korean population in Irvine. If you want to take advantage of that, I'd stay in N. Costa Mesa - it's a lot closer. Personally, I love going to H Mart at the Diamond Jamboree Plaza on my lunch for some quick hot stone bowl. Mmmmm....
