My daughter and her friends are coming in for the weekend and noticed that the grunnion are running Saturday night. We aren't planning on keeping any grunnion, I would assume just watching. We are only seeing mentions of Cabrillo Beach. Are there any beaches in OC known for the grunnion running? When I was young we used to go to Sunset Beach. Pretty clueless and I'd hate for us to show up at the wrong beach.

Oh, the great grunion run! My first summer in SoCal, my cousins took us fishing off the pier and we did grunion runs. Boy, that was so cool. I plan to take my kids once they're older, since it starts so late at night. My family did the grunion run in Long Beach and had the beach all to ourselves. There were hundreds of them washing ashore! I remember seeing the schedule for the rungs in previous years on Long Beach's website.

In OC, it looks like the fishies have appeared in Newport Beach, Corona Del Mar, Seal Beach, & Huntington Beach (Sunset Beach, as you mentioned). I just looked it up and I had no idea the female grunions are so picky on where to mate--they prefer south-facing sandy beaches. Sandy beaches? Serious, aren't all beaches sandy? .

Have you tried calling Fish and Wildlife? I didn't realize their office is so close to me. I hope you guys get to see them. It's such a fun experience.

P.S. I don't remember what part of Long Beach I went to for grunion runs, but this article from 2011 says Belmont Shore is an area where they can be seen. I would call the city of LB for more info. Good luck!

Belmont Shore is the classic grunion location in Long Beach. I'm not sure if Long Beach has them elsewhere.
