Hi everyone,

I am moving and looking for ideas of a town/city to start in with reasonable rent (800) and reliable preferably within an hour from the ocean . I am single in my early forties and my background is education and the creative arts therapies. I am open to being flexible to taking jobs in other areas initially such as waiting tables or retail work. I have heard huntington and seal beach are good areas to look at. I would appreciate any suggestions, thanks.

800 in rent? Are you talking 1 bedroom apartment or renting a room within someone's house?

Because I'm not even sure $800 a month is doable in the high desert for a 1 bedroom apartment.

Try Padmapper, but the results don't look promising for an $800 share. It looks like there is nothing listed for either Seal Beach or Huntington Beach, but a few things may be available in Long Beach.

Your chances increase, but only slightly, if you can up your budget to $850.00.

You will probably find more listings if you include Riverside cities like Corona, Temecula, and Murrieta in your Padmapper search. As you seem to know, generally speaking, housing is more expensive the closer you get to the coast. So, you might want to check not only the San Diego forum, but also that for Riverside County.

With that price point, you may need to be in the Inland Empire or rent a room from a single family home. Good luck! BTW, are you coming from Galway, Ireland?

Try Ventura or Oxnard.

Yeah $800 would be a dream come true for a studio over here. You should be able to find a roommate easily just by searching on craigs as well. Just be careful with the scammers out there.

What are creative arts therapies? Palm Springs, Palm Desert will have rentals between 800 and 1200 over the late spring and summer as snowbirds leave, as will Joshua Tree. Lots of meth out there and scammers.
